Dorothy Jean “Dottie” Mascaro

OI490404887_Mascarophoto[1]Dorothy Jean “Dottie” Mascaro, 78, of Brockway, PA; passed away on January 9, 2015 at Highland View Health Care Center in Brockway.

She was born on October 27, 1936 in Narrows, VA. She was the daughter of the late John and Lois Ratcliff. She was married to Joseph “Joe” Mascaro, Sr. of Brockway and He preceded her in death on November 8, 1992. Joe was the love of her life. Dottie and Joe were married for 24 years before his passing, but their years were rich with travel while Joe served in the U. S. Air Force and the U. S. Navy. Dottie proudly served as a military wife. Dottie fondly recalled how Joe’s five years with the U. S. Navy’s Blue Angels were full of fun, making their life at the time seem like “one big party.”

After graduation from high school in Narrows, Va, she attended cosmetology school in nearby Pearisburg, Va. Dottie then went on to teach cosmetology in Virginia and at the Pennsylvania Academy of Cosmetology in DuBois, Pa.

Dottie was most passionate about volunteerism, believing that helping others was what she was meant to do. She was a strong financial supporter of Veterans charities. Dottie had also served as President of the Fleet Reserve Association Ladies’ Auxiliary Branch 93 in Lexington Park, MD. Dottie was also a member of the Moose Lodge and belonged to the Red Hat Society of Lexington Park, Md.

Dottie will be greatly missed. She is survived by her sons: Robert Slusser of Canyon Lake, Texas and Joseph “Joey“ (Shelley) Mascaro of Lexington Park, Maryland. Dottie is also survived by her sister, Lillie Mae Bailey of Narrows, Va., one brother, Freddie Ray (Mildred) Ratcliff of Pembroke, Va., two step-sisters: Judy (Ronnie) Elliott of Ashland, Ky., and Darlene (Jack) Clemons of Rich Creek, Va. She is also survived by one granddaughter: Jennifer Shipp of Alexandria, Va., and one grandson: Joshua Mascaro of Lexington Park, Md., along with many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be on Wednesday, January 14th from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. at the Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home Inc. in Brockway, Pa. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, January 15th at 11:00 A.M. also at the funeral home with Msgr. Charles Kaza presiding. Burial will follow in St. Tobias Cemetery in Brockway, Pa. Memorial donations may be made to any of the following: the American Legion post 95 in Brockway, Pa., the American Legion post 255 in Ridge, Md., the Fleet Reserve Association Branch 93 in Lexington Park, Md., or the American Cancer Society.
