DuBois-based State Police Investigating IRS Scam

Scam caller concept.HORTON TWP., ELK CO., Pa. (EYT) – DuBois-based State Police are investigating an IRS scam that occurred on July 11 in Horton Township, Elk County.

Police say around 12:00 p.m., the 58-year-old female victim was contacted via phone and was told she would be arrested if she did not pay her taxes.

The victim purchased $500 in iTunes gift cards and gave the serial numbers off the back to someone claiming to be from the IRS.

Residents are reminded that phone scams are common and take on many forms.

If you have doubts as to the legitimacy of an unknown caller, hang up and verify with the police, or speak to family and friends. Do not allow yourself to be bullied into giving personal information over the phone to an unknown individual.
