DuBois Rides Hot Start; Double-Double From Husted to Win Over Carrick

CLARION, Pa. (D9Sports) – DuBois rode a quick start to a 55-45 win over Carrick in the District 8-9-10 Class 5A boys’ semifinals Wednesday night at Clarion High School.

The Beavers (15-8) used their distinct height advantage led by 6-foot-8 junior Chase Husted to an 18-5 lead after one quarter and never gave up the lead despite a couple of charges by Carrick (13-11) out of the Pittsburgh City League (District 8).

Relisten to the game:

“This win is great,” Husted, who had a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds, said. “We haven’t gotten a (playoff) win in a couple of years. It just feels great to get a win under our belt.”

Husted got loose for nine of his points in the opening quarter and looked unstoppable at times.

“Early on, I had my man sealed a couple of times,” Husted said. “I just have to thank my teammates for getting me those good feeds. They really did it for me tonight.”

But after the early success DuBois had against Carrick’s man-to-man defense, the Raiders changed to a zone, and the zone gave the Beavers fits.

DuBois managed just four points, all from Husted, in the second quarter including the final two coming with just 1.2 seconds left in the quarter, and saw their 13-point lead whittled down to six, 22-16, at halftime.

The Beavers got hot again in the third quarter with DuBois hitting four 3-pointers, including two from Justin Manduley, to go back up 11, 39-28, after Manduley beat the third-quarter buzzer.

The lead grew to 14, 48-34, following a free throw by Alex Beers with 1:52 to play, and the game looked well in hand.

But Carrick got back-to-back 3-pointers from Skyler Giannetti and Amaru Caldwell and then an offensive rebound and putback from Vernon Washington to cut the deficit to six, 48-42, with 1:01 to play.

“That Carrick team is a really good team,” Husted said. “They really hit shots.”

Another 3-pointer from Caldwell with 42.3 seconds left got the Raiders within five, 50-45, but Beers hit 3 of 4 free throws and Husted added two more to help DuBois stem off the comeback attempt.

Beers chipped in 16 points in the victory with Jonathan Cruz scoring nine on three 3-pointers and Manduley adding eight.

Caldwell hit four 3-pointers on his way to a team-high 12 points for Carrick. Giannetti hit three 3-pointers and finished with 10 points while A.J. Perella had eight.

DuBois will take on District 10 champion Meadville in the subregional title game Saturday, March 2, at time and District 10 site to be determined.
