Dush, Borowicz Vote to Terminate Wolf’s Emergency Declaration and Reopen Pennsylvania’s Economy

HARRISBURG, Pa. – Reps. Cris Dush (R-Jefferson/Indiana) and Rep. Stephanie Borowicz (R-Clinton/Centre) joined with their House Republican colleagues in casting a unanimous vote along with nine House Democrats voting to override the governor’s veto of House Resolution 836, which would allow the Legislature to end Wolf’s COVID-19 declaration.

However, the veto override failed to reach the necessary two-thirds majority. A release from Rep Dush notes 84 House Democrats voted “to continue the governor’s unchecked and unprecedented abuse of emergency powers which has forced more than 3.5 million Pennsylvanians to file for unemployment and countless employers to permanently close their businesses.”

“While the governor has been acting unilaterally to systematically destroy our economy, House and Senate Republicans have been taking action and working together to achieve the proper balance between public safety and putting people back to work,” said Dush. “Today’s majority vote is a continuation of our efforts to fully reopen Pennsylvania’s economy, but unfortunately there were not enough bipartisan votes from the House Democrat side of the aisle to put an end to Wolf’s tyranny.”

Had the veto override on House Resolution 836 been successful in both the House and Senate, the governor’s authority and actions pursuant to the disaster emergency declaration, declared on March 6, renewed on June 3, and renewed again on Aug. 31, would have been terminated. Additionally, any declaration, proclamation or order issued by the governor would no longer be in effect.

“The majority of state representatives are hearing from the citizens we serve that they no longer wish to live under a system where one governor and his secretary can order them to stay home, not go to work, shutter their family business or otherwise jeopardize their ability to put food on the table,” said Borowicz. “By voting to indefinitely sustain the governor’s dictates, House Democrats are once again suppressing the people’s right to determine how they will be governed.”
