ECC, Coudersport Boys; Karns City Girls All See Seasons End Tuesday

Three District 9 basketball teams saw their seasons come to an end Tuesday night.

BOYS’ CLASS A

Farrell 61, Elk County Catholic 38

CLARION, Pa. – After taking a 10-point halftime lead, Farrell outscored Elk County Catholic by 13 in the second half to roll to a 61-38 win over the Crusaders in the second round of the PIAA Class A Boys’ basketball playoffs Tuesday night at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

District 9 champion ECC, which lost its first game of the year, trailed 30-20 at the break before being outscored 18-11 in the third quarter and 13-7 in the fourth.

Kyi Wright scored 17 points for lead Farrell, the District 10 runner-up, while Malik Miller added 15 points and Terrance Holloway nine.

Nate DaCanal led ECC with 17 points. Gabe Kraus chipped in 10.

Kennedy Catholic 65, Coudersport 26

CLARION, Pa. – District 10 champion Kennedy Catholic got 20 points from Jason Austin, who transferred to Kennedy for his senior season from Sharon, and 15 points from Sagaba Kontate, a native of Mali, to beat District 9 runner-up Coudersport, 65-26, in the PIAA Class A Boys’ Second Round at Clarion University’s Tippin Gym.

Drew Magestro, another transfer from Sharon before last season, added seven points for the Golden Eagles.

Jared Green and Owen Chambers led Coudersport with six points each. Aaron Wolfinger and Darren Keglovits each added five points.

GIRLS’ CLASS AA

North Star 50, Karns City 30

INDIANA, Pa. – District 5 champion North Star started the game on an 11-0 run and never trailed in getting a 50-30 win over District 9 champion Karns City in the second round of the PIAA Class AA girls’ playoffs at IUP’s KCAC Tuesday night.

Jackie Stanko led North Star with 19 points, while Courtney Schrock added 16 points.

LeeAnn Gibson paced Karns City with 11 points and finished her career as the third-leading scorer in school history with 1,456 points. Alyssa Gibson added nine points and Emily Hegedus eight points.
