Edward L. Bennett

Edward L. Bennett, 71, formerly of Russell City, died Sunday morning, May 8, 2016 at Sena Kean Manor in Smethport.

Born August 18, 1944 in Kane, he was the son of Ralph H. and Adeline R. Lee Bennett. He had been married to Judy Walters Bennett, who survives of Kane.

Ed owned and operated Bennett Lumber in Russell for most of his life. He stayed very active by bowling, fishing, pitching horseshoes and shooting basketballs. The time he spent enjoying these sports was minuscule compared with the amount of energy he devoted to his true passion, stock car racing. An owner and driver, he raced at Allegheny Mountain Speedway in Kane and Hummingbird Speedway in Reynoldsville, among others.

Surviving are two daughters, Brenda (Bill) Cline and Sharon (Jim) Rathbun, both of Kane; Joshua Keith, whom he raised as his son; a sister, Donna (Dick) Chubon of Randolph, N.Y.; plus several nieces and nephews, including Amy (Ken) Beers, and several grandchildren.

He was preceded in death, besides his parents, by his son Steve Bennett in 1988 and his brother Bill Bennett in 2015.

Friends may call at the Ronald McDonald II Funeral Home, Inc. in Kane on Tuesday from 10:00 until 11:00, at which time a memorial service will be held there with the rev. Bruce Kumher, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Kane, officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation, Grand Central Station, P.O. Box 4777, New York, NY 10163-4777.
