Elmer J. Baun

Elmer J. Baun, 94, Punxsutawney, died Wednesday, August 16, 2017, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born November 5, 1922, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Mary Alverta (Yarion) and Elmer O. Baun.

He was married to Roberta Lowmaster on May 15, 1947. He then married Jane O. (Campbell) Baun on October 1, 1981, who preceded him in death on October 16, 2013.

Elmer was a lifetime member of the CMA Church of Punxsutawney and was there when the church started in 1929.

He was a 1941 graduate of the Punxsutawney High School Class of 1941.

He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United States Navy of the Seabees 69th Battalion from 1943 to 1946 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific Theaters.

He was a lifetime member of the Big Run V.F.W. and the American Legion.

Elmer was a lifetime member of the Bricklayers and Allied Crafts Local #9 of Pittsburgh, PA. He retired as a bricklayer and stonemason and built many houses, fireplaces, and commercial buildings. He began his career doing his apprenticeship on SS.C.D. Church. He also did refractory work for Corning Glass and Brockway Glass in many states repairing and building new furnaces and hot work.

Southern quartets were his favorite kind of music. He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, car racing, cutting firewood, traveling, playing games, especially chess and Mexican train, and going on mission trips to Costa Rica and Jamaica where he said that this was the best thing he did in his life building churches down there and seeing how God blessed the Christian believers there who had so little in this world but depended only on God for everything.

He is survived by a daughter Kay Walborn and husband Gary of Falls Creek, PA; three sons, John E. Baun and wife Linda of Allentown, PA, Kenneth P. Baun and wife Gina of Overbrook, KS, and Thomas R. Baun and wife Kathy of Rossiter, PA; four step-children, Linda Ranker-Allen and husband Thomas of York, PA, Michael Milliron of Punxsutawney, Kathy Bonadio and husband Francis of York, PA, and Jennifer Renne and husband Pete of Punxsutawney; four grandsons, Mark, Marty, and Kurtis Walborn, and Shane Baun; two great granddaughters, Taylor and Alexis Walborn; two great granddaughters, Courtney and Janell; one great grandson Tanner; six step grandchildren, Cara Bonadio Casillo, Christina and husband Justin Lee, and Tony Bonadio, Father David Renne, Andrew Ranker, and Julie Cielo; and one step great grandson, Troy Lee.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, brothers John, Leonard, and Harry Baun, and sisters Grace E. and Sylvia Baun.

Friends will be received from 4 to 8 p.m., Saturday, August 19, 2017 and from 2 to 3 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2017, at the Deeley Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m., Sunday, August 20, 2017, at the funeral home with Pastor John Buchmann officiating.

Interment will be in Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Christian Missionary Alliance Church, 1307 South Main Street Extension, Punxsutawney, PA 15767.
