Elsie Jane (Sanford) Hopper

thumbsElsie Jane (Sanford) Hopper, 87 of Redbank, Pa, went to her eternal home early Sunday morning, November 23, 2014.

She was born November 28, 1926 in Templeton, Pa, the daughter of the late Lester and Flossie (Young) Sanford. During her childhood she also lived in Butler, Etna, and Templeton attending a total of six schools through 12th grade. Mrs. Hopper married Gale Hopper on April 28, 1945 in Seneca, Pa, together they had three children, and he preceded her in death on October27, 2001. She has resided on their family farm in Redbank, Pa, since their marriage.

In addition to being a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, Mrs. Hopper was also an accomplished musician, playing the guitar, mandolin, bango, violin and keyboard. She performed at square dances at the Craig Reunion Ground and on the radio. She also enjoyed making canvas and crochet crafts and painting ceramics. Mrs. Hopper was proud of her flower garden, and enjoyed telling the stories of where each flower came from. “Mammaw” as her family called her, also cherished visits from family and friends. She was a member of the Tidal Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Nancy Jean Hopper of Emlenton, Pa, and Betty Lou Garmong and her husband Donald of Redbank, Pa; two grandsons, Brian Garmong and his wife Lori of Redbank, Pa; and Shawn Garmong and his wife Kinlee of Findlay, Ohio; two great grandsons, Gale Garmong of Oakmont, Pa; and Garrett Garmong of Redbank, Pa; two sisters, Gerry Kruse and her husband Dave of North Tonawanda, New York; Dorothy Gallo and her husband Frank of Franklin, Pa; and a brother Paul Sanford and his wife Peggy of Kellersburg, Pa.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, William Edward Hopper, a brother, Lester Ronald Sanford, and a sister, Annabelle Marte.

Visitation will be on Monday November 24, 2014 from 4 to 8 p.m. and Tuesday November 25, 2014 from noon to 1 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn, Pa.. The funeral service will be held Tuesday, at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home, with Pastor Sarah Heppenstall officiating. Interment will be in the Tidal Union Cemetery, Madison Township, Armstrong County.
