Esther M. Irwin

Esther M. Irwin, 90, a resident of Christ the King Manor, Dubois, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2014.

She was born on August 27, 1924, in Pittsburgh, to the late Berney and Esther Gertrude Weihrauch Shafer.

Esther was married to Clarence Irwin, who preceded her in death on October 4, 2013.

She was a loving and caring homemaker.

Esther was also an artist, whose talents were recognized by her 5th grade art teacher at the age of 11, when she won Grand Prize in the Associated Artists national contest for her “french crayon” drawing of “The Woman on the Steps”. Her photo was featured by the Pittsburgh Post Gazette.

Many years later, she was recognized in the Pittsburgh Press Sunday, June 10, 1945 issue, for sending “pinups” to her hubby, Clarence, who was in the Marine Corps during WWII.

She worked at the Cherry Point, NC Marine Base until Clarence was transferred to other parts of the world during WWII. After discharge from the Marines, she and Clarence returned to Pittsburgh to work and raise their family.

Esther is survived by her three children: daughter, Beverly Dawes (Ronald) of DuBois, Roy Irwin and Ron Irwin (Holly) of Atlanta, GA; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Clarence, with whom she shared over 70 years of married life.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Robert V. Burns Funeral Home, 638 Wood Street, Clarion.

A memorial service for Clarence and Esther will be announced at a later date.
