Eugene F. “Gene” Smith, 77, of Punxsutawney, died Tuesday, December 8, 2020, at his home.
Gene was born November 1, 1943, in Punxsutawney, a son of the late Helen I. (Toth) and Banks E. “Jerry” Smith. On May 14, 1983, he married Marie A. (Confer) Smith, who survives.
Gene worked in the coal mines as a maintenance foreman for nearly thirty years. He then opened his own business in 1986, G & S Hydraulics. He enjoyed working, camping, tinkering, NASCAR races, and hunting.
In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include four children, son Brian Smith and wife Shirl of Punxsutawney, Kimberly Schaffron and husband Shawn of Rossiter, Richie Smith and wife Angie of Strattanville, and Willie Smith and wife Jessica of Punxsutawney; three grandchildren, Peyton, Abi and Aerith; five siblings, brother Robert Smith and wife Mae of Punxsutawney, brother Jerry Smith of Tyrone, brother Larry “Smokey” Smith and wife Kay of Port Orange, FL, sister June Hineman and husband Dave of Bridgeport, WV, and brother Ronald “Sonny” Smith and wife Louise of White Cloud, MI.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Gerald Smith.
A private funeral service will be held for the family. Interment will be in St. Jacob’s Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
