Former Clarion Coach Jim Weaver Passes Away at 70

shapeimage_2Jim Weaver, 70, of Blacksburg, Virginia passed away at his home on Thursday, July 2, 2015. He was born in Harrisburg, PA on March 5, 1945 to the late Virginia F. and Paul L. Weaver.

Jim was a 1967 graduate of Penn State where he played and coached football for legendary football coach, Joe Paterno. He also spent five years on the Clarion State College football staff, 1975 to 1979, working on the defensive side of football for Defensive Coordinator, Charlie Ruslavage.

Jim began his tenure at Virginia Tech in 1997 where he served as the director of athletics for more than 16 years before retiring at the end of 2013. At Virginia Tech, Jim guided the Hokies through conference membership changes twice, a school-wide tragedy, and formulated a blueprint for one of the most successful athletics departments in the country.

Jim’s accomplishments did not go unnoticed on the national level. In 2009, he won the prestigious John L. Toner award presented by the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. The award is given each year to a director of athletics who has demonstrated superior administrative abilities and shown outstanding dedication to college athletics and particularly college football. He was also named AD of the Year by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) in May of 2014. Later that year, as a reward for his service the Hokie Club provided Jim and son Craig with the opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of attending the Major League Baseball World Series.

He is survived by his wife Traci Weaver; four sons, Josh Tessar and wife, Brittney, Paul Tessar, Cole Tessar and wife, Jillian, and Craig Weaver; step daughter, Kelly Carter ; three sisters, Peggy Lane and husband, Rick, Ginger Zozos and husband, George, and Wendy Weaver; six grandchildren, Hollins and Holden Tessar, Kaylee and Wyatt Tessar, Lily Kate Tessar, and Michael Haughbrook; nieces, Brandy Myers and husband, Drew, Marlo Sweigard and husband, Travis, and Stacie Campbell and husband, John; nephews, Paul Zozos, Carlin and Bradin Carter, and many family members.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 from 5 to 8 PM at McCoy Funeral Home located in Blacksburg, VA. Funeral services will be Wednesday, July 8, 2015 at 11a.m. with reception to follow at Blacksburg United Methodist Church, located at 111 Church Street, Blacksburg, VA 24060.
