BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – WRC Senior Services will be offering free memory screenings for the public during National Memory Screening Week, which began on November 1.
The screening will be held from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Friday, November 6 and at Laurelbrooke Personal Care in Brookville.
An appointments must be made for the screening by calling Laurelbrooke Personal Care at 814-849-3615.
Qualified healthcare professionals will administer the memory screenings and provide educational materials about memory concerns, brain health and caregiving.
The face-to-face screenings consist of a series of questions and tasks and take approximately 15 minutes to complete.
National Memory Screening Day was introduced by the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America in 2003 in order to promote the early detection of memory loss in November during Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, and this year the event was expanded to a week long.
AFA suggests memory screenings for anyone concerned about memory loss or experiencing warning signs of dementia; whose family and friends have noticed changes in them; who have a family history of dementia; or who want to see how their memory is now and for future comparisons.
Warning signs of dementia include forgetting people’s names and events, asking repetitive questions, loss of verbal or written skills, confusion and personality changes.
The memory screening does not make a diagnosis. Below average scores should be followed up by a full medical exam with your physician.
Some memory problems can be readily treated, such as those caused by vitamin deficiencies or thyroid problems.
Other memory problems might result from causes that are not currently reversible, such as Alzheimer’s Disease. However there are medications available to help lessen or stabilize symptoms for a time.
