Grace M. Courtwright Filer

Grace M. Courtwright Filer, age 101, of Indiana, passed away Tuesday, October 7, 2014 at Communities of Indian Haven.

She was born in 1913 in Rossiter to Armour J. and Carrie Pearce McFarland.

Mrs. Filer was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church, Indiana, where she was active with the Golden Heirs’ Senior Group, the Alliance Women, and served as a Sunday School teacher and Deaconess.

During WW II, she was employed as a civilian with the US Navy, followed as a clerk for the Indiana County Commissioners, and finally as a clerk with the PA Dept. of Revenue, Inheritance Tax Department.

Grace is survived by her primary caregivers – nieces Dorothy Painter and Pam Hankinson, Rossiter; her sister – Mary Bishop, Butler; her brother – Boyd A. McFarland and wife Grace, San Antonio, TX; her step-granddaughter – Cindy Zell and husband Johnathan, Pittsburgh; step-great grandchildren – Jared and Hanna Zell, Pittsburgh; step-son-in-law – Donald Moose, Indiana; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her first husband – Kenneth Courtwright in 1950; by her second husband – Arthur W. Filer in 2001; by the following siblings – Nancy and Gladys McFarland, Ethel Cameron, John Lynn, and James Paul McFarland; step-daughter – Shirley Moose; a step-son – Rev. William W. Filer; and by a step-grandson – William L. Filer.

Friends will be received on Saturday from 1 to 3 P.M. at the Bowser-Minich Funeral Home, Indiana, where a funeral service will be held Saturday at 3 P.M. with the Rev. William Murphy officiating. Interment will be made in the Devers Cemetery.
