Harold “Hud” A. Powell

Powell HaroldHarold “Hud” A. Powell, 83, of Ohl, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 20, 2015.

He was born on the family farm in Ringgold Township, Jefferson County on February 2, 1932, a son of the late William and Arveta (Snyder) Powell. He was married February 11, 1956 to Janet Eva (Burford) Powell, who survives, at the Oakland Church of God in Distant, PA

He was given the nickname, Hud, by his grandfather, John Powell, as a toddler. Many people only knew him as “Hud” through out his lifetime. Stationed at Fort Campbell Kentucky, he was a trained parachuter in the United States Army.

Mr. Powell attended the Ringgold one-room school house through the 8th grade. He worked on the family and neighboring farms prior to becoming a truck driver, retiring from Jefferson Paving of Brookville in 1992. He was a gifted guitarist and love playing music with numerous country bands including The Melody Makers, Country Lite, The Evans Sisters and the Witchita Strings, and The Country Sounds. Hud was a previous member of the Musicians Union, Brookville Aerie # 983 Fraternal Order of Eagles, and the Punxsutawney Moose.

Hud loved spending time with family and friends, playing games, and hunting. In most recent years in enjoyed listing to his pastor’s sermons since he was unable to attend regular church services. He was a storyteller and spent many hours telling stories about his childhood and of his children.

He was a caring, gentle and loving husband and dad. He is survived by his children: Denise Eble, and husband John, of Summerville; Shelly Hammond, and husband Rocky, of Fairmount City; Glenda Confer, and husband Harry, of Sigel, Jane Lucas, and husband Bernie, of Youngsville, and John Powell, and wife Kim, of Sykesville; a daughter-in-law: Paula Powell, of Knox Dale. He is also survived by his brothers Blair Powell of New Bethlehem, Allen Powell, and wife Lorraine, of Brookville, and Leon Powell of Ringgold; 15 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a son William Powell, an infant daughter Mary Ann Powell; and two brothers: Glenn “Buzz” Powell and Howard Powell.

Friends will be received Tuesday June 23, 2015, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at the Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church, with Pastor Roger Howard officiating. Immediately following the funeral services the American Legion will honor their fallen comrade. Interment will be in the Ohl Cemetery, Jefferson County.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to Ohl United Methodist Church, 3249 Heathville Ohl Rd Summerville, PA 15864 or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
