Hearing for Punxsy Woman Accused of Throwing Phone at Child, Causing Injury Set for Thursday

PUNXSUTAWNEY BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – A hearing is scheduled for Thursday for a Punxsutawney woman who is accused of throwing a phone at a child and causing an injury to his mouth.

Court documents indicate 36-year-old Sharlynn R. Steiner is scheduled to stand for a preliminary hearing in front of Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock at 10:00 a.m. on December 2, on the following charges:

– Endangering Welfare of Children – Parent/Guardian/Other Commits Offense, Misdemeanor 1
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 1

The charges stem from an incident that took place at a local residence earlier this month.

According to a criminal complaint, on November 17, Punxsutawney Borough Police were contacted by Jefferson County Children and Youth Services (CYS) regarding a ChildLine report about a student at Punxsutawney Area Elementary School.

The complaint indicates a juvenile victim had disclosed to a teacher that he had not been in school on Tuesday because of his mouth, which he pulled down his mask and showed the teacher was red and swollen.

According to the complaint, the victim reported that the injury had occurred when Sharlynn Steiner had thrown a phone at his face on Monday night. The victim also reportedly stated that his mouth had bled “all night long” that night. He also indicated that Steiner told him not to tell any of his teachers about her throwing the phone at him because “they will make a big deal out of it.”

The complaint notes that it was found that the victim’s lip was swollen, bruised, and cut.

Police then met with Steiner to question her about what had occurred with the victim.

According to the complaint, Steiner told police she was laying in bed with the victim, and he was “nagging her” for about 45 minutes that he wanted her phone. She reported that she finally gave in and “tossed” the phone to the victim, and it hit him in the mouth. She then gave him a “rag” to stop the bleeding.

The complaint indicates Steiner told police she didn’t realize the severity of the injury until the next day when she saw the bruise on the victim’s mouth. She also reportedly stated the victim didn’t attend school on Tuesday because of his asthma.

When asked about what she told the victim he was supposed to tell anyone who asked about his mouth, Steiner reportedly said she told him to tell the truth.

Steiner was arraigned in front of Magisterial District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock at 8:00 p.m. on November 17.

She is currently free on $20,000.00 (10%) monetary bail.
