Helpful Tips to Safeguard Your Home This Holiday Season

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A spark from a fireplace, an unattended candle or an unexpected visit from a thief can quickly turn your holiday celebration into a seasonal nightmare.

That’s why the Pennsylvania Insurance Department is reminding you to take precautions and consider these safety tips.

This season:

Do keep your fireplace clean and well-maintained; never leave burning candles or cooking appliances unattended.

Do choose decorations that are flame resistant or flame retardant and keep your holiday greenery well watered.

Do tear down boxes and dispose of them on trash day so those outside do not know what new items have been brought into the house.

Do let neighbors know when you won’t be home so they may be aware if there are uninvited visitors in your home.

Do keep track of any gifts you may receive, such as jewelry or electronics, by downloading the free myHOME Scr.APP.book app.

Don’t keep your gifts in plain view of windows and doors.

Don’t mention on social media the dates and times you are going to holiday parties or winter excursions.

If a theft happens, it is not likely your items will be recovered. If properly insured; however, homeowners can be compensated for a loss. Be certain your coverage is up to date, retain receipts and contact your company immediately to report a theft.
