Hickory Grove Elementary Students Get Up Close With Black Bear

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – The students in 5th and 6th grade at Hickory Grove Elementary School recently got a chance to take part in the processing of a Pennsylvania Black Bear.

Pennsylvania Game Wardens Andrew Troutman and Steven Ace walked the students through the steps that they complete during a routine bear process and led the students through a question and answer session that touched on bear biology and the trapping and tranquilizing process.

Officer Troutman, with the assistance of Officer Ace, and 5th-grade teacher, Mrs. Zimmerman, pulled a tooth from the bear, that will be sent to the state headquarters for analysis, and to assess the age and health of the bear.

At the culmination of the presentation, each student who wanted to participate was able to touch the bear’s fur and to get a close-up look at the physical characteristics of the bear, which weighed in at 190 pounds. It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the majority of the students.

The school would like to offer a huge thank you to Officers Andrew Troutman and Stephen Ace, of the Pennsylvania Game Commission, for processing and presenting the tranquilized black bear for the students.
