High School Baseball Roundup: Shaffer Gem Gives Brookville Win Over St. Marys

Tuesday’s high school baseball recaps.

BROOKVILLE 3, ST. MARYS 1

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Wyatt Shaffer tossed a two-hit gem to lead Brookville to a 3-1 win over visiting St. Marys.

Shaffer went all seven innings giving up a first-inning run.He walked two and struck out four allowing just one hit after the first inning.

Kyle Dunkle was 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI to pace the Raiders, while Jordan Tosh also had a double and an RBI and Ben Caun also drove home a run. Tanner LaBenne and Logan Thrush also doubled for Brookville.

Tim Beimel had a leadoff double in the first for St. Marys and scored in the inning on a Jeff Wehler groundout. Brandon Lenze had the other hit for the Dutch.

Nate Beimel took the loss going five innings allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out one.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 3, BRADFORD 1, 9 INNINGS

BRADFORD, Pa. – Lance Pennington and Peyton Graham combined to throw a nine-inning three-hitter to lead Punxsutawney to a 3-1, nine-inning win at Bradford.

The game was tied at one through eight before the Chucks scored a pair of unearned runs in the ninth to get the victory.

Pennington started and went seven innings allowing one run on three hits and five walks while striking out eight. Graham then was dominant over the final two innings striking out five of the six batters he faced to get the win.

Andrew Bacha, Danny Manion and Connor Vecellio kept pace with the Punxsy duo most of the afternoon combining to strike out 10 Chucks in nine innings while giving up just five hits and no earned runs. Manion also had the game’s only extra-base hit, a double.

Punxsy took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on a Pennington sac fly, but a single by Vecellio in the sixth forced extra innings.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 9, KEYSTONE 2

KNOX, Pa. – Jack Frank and Michael Misiewicz each drove in two runs to lead visiting DuBois Central Catholic to a 9-2 win over Keystone.

Jake and Justin Miknis each added a pair of hits for the Cardinals, as did Austen Cogley.

Thomas Grecco got the win going four innings and allowing two runs on four hits and a walk while striking out nine.

Keystone took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but DCC used a seven-run fourth to take control of the game.

Brooks LaVan had a pair of hits for the Panther, as did Nick Baughman, who added an RBI.

Nate Wingard suffered the loss going 2 ⅔ innings allowing eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits and a walk while striking out three.

CLARION-LIMESTONE 7, NORTH CLARION 0

STRATTANVILLE, Pa. – Sam Leadbetter struck out 12 while throwing a five-hit shutout to lead Clarion-Limestone a 7-0 win over visiting North Clarion.

Leadbetter needed an even 100 pitchers to throw his masterpiece and also helped himself on offense going 2-for-4 with a double, a walk and four RBIs.

Taylor Smith and Colby Himes each scored twice for the Lions with Himes adding an RBI. Jack Zacherl also drove in a run.

Griffin Schmader paced North Clarion going 3-for-3, while Zayn Hargenrader was 2-for-3.

Zayn Hargenrader took the loss in relief of Zander Hargenrader. Zayn went three innings giving up seven runs, three earned, on five hits and three walks while striking out five. Zander pitched three scoreless innings allowing one hit and four walks while striking out two.

All seven of C-L’s runs came in the Lions’ final two at bats with a four-run fifth and a three-run sixth breaking open a scoreless game.

VENANGO CATHOLIC 12, FOREST AREA 7

OIL CITY, Pa. – Hunter Lancaster was 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored to pace Venango Catholic to a 12-7 win over visiting Forest Area.

One of Lancaster’s hits was a double, while Robert Felmlee also had a double while going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Ian Hidinger also drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings, while Thomas Fink, Parker Slagle and Josh Puleo each scored twice.

Ian Bain got the win going 4 ⅔ innings and allowing three runs, two earned, on four hits and seven strikeouts. Felmlee went the final 2 ⅓ innings allowing four runs, two earned, on one hit and four walks while striking out five.

Nic Smail paced Forest Area with three hits, including a double, while Austin Johnino had a pair of singles for the Fires.
