High School Baseball/Softball Roundup: C-L Sweeps Softball DH from Brookville

Friday’s baseball and softball recaps.

SOFTBALL

CLARION-LIMESTONE 5, BROOKVILLE 4; C-L 18, BROOKVILLE 7, 6 INNINGS

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – Maddie Williams singled in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh in the first game, while a 10-run sixth inning in the nightcap broke things open helping Clarion-LImestone sweep a doubleheader from Brookville, 5-4 an 18-7 in six innings.

In the first game of what was a makeup game of a previous rainout at C-L, the Lady Lions tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth before Williams singled in Alyssa Kiser for the game-winner in the seventh.

Maddy Craig, Sadie Mahle, Kyser and Williams all had two hits for C-L with Kiser, the winning pitcher, doubling in two runs in the third inning.

Brookville got three hits from Elaina Powell, including a triple and two-run inside-the-park homer. Carlie McManigle and Jordan MacWilliams each had two hits.

In the second game, the Lady Lions played most of the game with eight legal hitters and nine legal fielders because of losing two players who had to leave for another school function and the misinterpretation of the designated player rule by head coach Abby Heller. The result was a vacancy in the No. 9 spot which resulted in four automatic outs.

However, the four outs didn’t stop the Lady Lions from scoring 18 runs, including 10 in the sixth inning that broke open an 8-7 lead for C-L at the time.

Kiser finished off her big day at the plate and busy day on the mound, going all 13 innings for the Lady Lions in the two wins. In the second game, she went 3-for-4 with four runs batted in. She doubled in a run and hit a two-run inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning.

Megan Schimp and Abby Carl also had three hits apiece for the Lady Lions. Carl hit a bases-loaded triple in the sixth as well. McManigle and Laken Hergert each had two hits for Brookville.

CLARION, PA. – Cortney Claypoole hit a home run and a triple to lead Moniteau to a 6-0 win at Clarion.

Claypoole was 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored and two RBIs.

Kennedy DeMatteis, meanwhile, was again strong with the bat and in the circle.

Union tied the game at one with an unearned run in the fifth on a passed ball, but the Lions quickly went back ahead in the bottom of the fifth on a double to center by freshman Colby Himes.
