High School Boys’ Basketball Roundup: DCC Wins on Late Shot in Varacallo’s Coaching Debut

DUBOIS, Pa. (D9Sports) – Thomas Grecco hit the game-winning shot with 3.8 seconds left, as host DuBois Central Catholic made it a happy debut for first-year head coach Dom Varacallo with a 56-54 win over Marion Center in the opening round of the DCC Tip-off Tournament.

Grecco finished with seven points and five rebounds, while Justin Miknis led the Cardinals with 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. He picked up the helper on the game-winning shot.

Noah Pettenati also had 12 points and five rebounds for DCC, who will play Punxsutawney in the title game Saturday.

Tyler Lightcap had 15 points for Marion Center, who will take on Johnsonburg in Saturday’s consolation.

CLEARFIELD 81, CURWENSVILLE 38

CURWENSVILLE, Pa. – Tommy Hazel and Will Myers combined to score 53 points, as Clearfield started its season with an 81-38 road win over neighboring Curwensville.

Hazel had a double-double for the Bison with 26 points and 12 rebounds while Myers had a game-high 27 points to go with five boards. Hazel also added four helpers. Evan Brown chipped in 11 points and six steals.

Zach Marshall led Curwensville with 12 points.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 52, JOHNSONBURG 44

DUBOIS, Pa. – Brandon Matthews scored a game-high 18 points to go with 11 rebounds, as Punxsutawney beat Johnsonburg, 52-44, in the opening round of the DuBois Central Catholic Tip-off Tournament.

Devin Kelly chipped in 12 for the Chucks, who will face host DCC in the championship game Saturday.

Drew Akers led Johnsonburg with 10 points. The Rams take on Marion Center in the consolation contest Saturday.

FOREST AREA 58, TIDIOUTE CHARTER 32

MARIENVILLE, Pa. – Seth Berlin had a monster game with 23 points, 17 rebounds and five assists, as host Forest Area beat Tidioute Charter, 58-32, in the opening round of the Forest Area Tip-off Tournament at East Forest.

Dillion DiCorpo added 11 points, five assists and four steals for the Fires, while Dereck Marshall also distributed five helpers.

Mason Delce led Tidioute with 10 points.

Forest will play Union City in the title game Saturday, while Tidioute face Warren County Christian in the consolation.

CLARION 67, DUBOIS 46

KNOX, Pa. – Three players reach double digits for Clarion, as the Bobcats toppled DuBois, 67-46, in the opening round of the Keystone Tip-off Tournament.

Reed Anthony led the way for the Bobcats with 15 points, while Ty Burford added 12 tallies and Austin Hummell 10.

Nick LaBrasca paced DuBois with 19 points, including 10 in the first quarter.

Clarion will play St. Marys in the title game, while DuBois will take on Keystone in the consolation contest Saturday.
