HS Baseball Roundup: Punxsy, DuBois, DCC all Get Wins

Wednesday’s high school baseball recaps.

PUNXSUTAWNEY 13, ST. MARYS 3, 5 INNINGS

ST. MARYS, Pa. – John Matthews and Lance Pennington each had two-hit games to lead Punxsutawney to a 13-3, five-inning win at St. Marys.

Matthews was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored, while Pennington was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles and two runs scored.

Braxton Giavedoni also had a double going 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored, while Jacob Weaver had his first varsity hit, a double. Dylan Bender, running for Joey DiPietro, scored twice.

DiPietro was 1-for-2 with a run scored himself and two walks, and Peyton Graham scored twice as well.

Jeff Wehler was 1-for-2 with a walk, a run scored and two RBIs for the Dutch, while Michael Beimel went 2-for-3.

Pennington got the win going three innings and allowing three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out three. Graham threw two scoreless innings giving up a hit and two walks while striking out two.

Jared Groll took the loss for St. Marys.

DUBOIS 6, BRADFORD 1

DUBOIS, Pa. – Zach Sloan had a pair of hits, two RBIs and three runs scored to pace DuBois to a 6-1 win over visiting Bradford at Showers Field.

Sloan went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, while Drew Bankovich and Ryan Pasternak were also both 2-for-4 with Pasternak hitting a double. Nick LaBrasca and Matt Agosti also each had doubles for the Beavers, who scored twice in the third and three times in the fourth to go up 5-0.

That was more than enough for LaBrasca and Sloan on the mound.

LaBrasca threw the first six innings giving up one run on two hits and four walks while striking out five. Sloan threw a scoreless seventh walking one and striking out two.

DUBOIS CENTRAL CATHOLIC 5, CLARION-LIMESTONE 0

DUBOIS, Pa. – DuBois Central Catholic scored four times in the first inning on its way to a 5-0 win over visiting Clarion-Limestone at Showers Field.

Thomas Grecco had a two-run single in the first for the Cardinals, while Ty Bittner, who had a pair of hits in the game as well, had an RBI in the inning.

Jack Frank added a pair of hits, while Brandon Walker had two RBIs including a sacrifice fly.

Sam Leadbetter had C-L’s lone hit.

Jake Miknis went four innings on the mound to get the win. He allowed one hit and struck out 11 of the 14 batters he faced while walking one. Nick Szczerba threw one inning with three strikeouts, and Grecco went two innings striking out four and walking one.

REDBANK VALLEY 12, FOREST AREA 2, 5 INNINGS

TIONESTA, Pa. – With his bat and his arm, Adam Kunselman helped lead Redbank Valley to a 12-2, five-inning win over Forest Area at West Forest.

Kunselman was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIS and two runs scored while also picking up the win pitching two scoreless, hitless innings of relief walking one and striking out two in relief of

Grayson Harmon, who went two scoreless innings giving up two hits and a walk while striking out one.

Harmon was also 1-for-2 with a walk, two runs scored and an RBI, while Connor Shoemaker was 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI and Hunter Buzzard was 1-for-1 with a triple and an RBI.

Nick Smail was 1-for-3 with a single, a stolen base and a run scored for Forest Area, while Austin Johnino was 1-for-3 with a run scored.
