‘Hunting with Gist’ Presentation Scheduled for November 20 at Heritage House

BROOKVILLE, Pa. – “Hunting with Gist” will be presented by Dr. Charles Williams at the Heritage House on Friday, November 20.

Dr. Williams’s program, “Hunting with Gist: Wild Game Provisioning During the 1750 Expedition of Christopher Gist to the Ohio Country” will be presented at the meeting of the North Fork Chapter 29 of the Society for Pennsylvania Archaeology.

The program begins at 7:00 pm and is free and open to the public.

Early frontier expeditions in North America often relied on hunting of wild game to supplement provisions. Typically there is little to no information on the game species or numbers harvested.

In September 1750, Frontiersman Christopher Gist was sent on an expedition to discover the lands of the River Ohio.

His journal included details on the lands, people and resources including the types wild game hunted including bear, deer, elk and turkey.

In his program, Dr. Williams will compare and contrast the value of each of these documented species and discuss their individual importance in providing sustenance to the expedition.
