Ida May (Larson) Emerick

Ida May EmerickIda May (Larson) Emerick, age 88, of Brookville, PA, has “Gone Home” to be with her Lord and Savior, on Monday, May 8, 2017, as a resident of the Jefferson Manor.

Ida was born on June 6, 1928, to the late Ernest and Myrtle (Shaffer) Larson, in Summitville, OH.

As a young girl, she attended the Sykesville School. Her skill and talent for nurturing were learned early and she used it to her advantage when she became a Nanny in Mt. Lebanon, near Pittsburgh, PA.

She eventually left this position and enrolled in God’s Bible School and College, in Cincinnati, OH.

After her time spent at the school, she married Harvey A. Emerick on September 30, 1948, and they began their family; Harvey preceded her in passing on January 17, 2001.

They were married in Emerickville, PA, and this is where they raised their children on the family farm.

She was a member of the Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Brookville, PA, and has been, since just after its opening, when they were located on E. Main Street in Brookville.

She was also a member of the Pennsylvania Empowered Expert Residents, or PEER, which is a group that aims to help fellow residents feel empowered while they are being cared for in Nursing Facilities. They also help to ensure safety for themselves and others from mistreatment or bullying from staff or fellow residents.

She took this as a calling and fulfilled her role to the best of her ability. This want to help others is something that Ida has had her entire life, and after her children left home and she lived alone, she would reach out to help anyone she could.

Every Sunday she would invite different families from her church affiliation to her home for a meal; she did this even when she really didn’t have the means to provide for others.

Ida was modest and she considered herself a plain person, but she loved high-heels.

She played the harmonica, even when other tasks became difficult for her, she could remember and share music through this little instrument, even as recently as last year.

She was friends with everyone and she loved bald headed babies and brown eyes.

She loved to crochet and she used this talent to make gifts for her family as well as make special, and often very difficult, works of art; some of which can be seen at her church augmenting depictions of her Lord, a way for her to show her love and devotion to Him.

She was also very talented with gardening, sewing, and quilting. Her greatest joy and accomplishment though was raising her family unto the Lord.

Her family sends a huge thank you to the Jefferson Court and the Jefferson Manor. You all have loved her, cared for her, and made her hardest times more bearable. Your ability to give her peace and comfort is something that her family will treasure and admire for many years.

They also thank In Home Solution’s for your care in the most recent struggles she dealt with.

Ida is survived by 3 daughters; Dlana Harp of Marienville, PA; Denise (Ronald) Garthwaite of Brookville, PA; Emma (Steve) Reed of Brookville, PA; 2 sons; Denny (Diane) Emerick of Valparaiso, IN; Barry (Melissa) Emerick of Brookville, PA; 3 granddaughters; Christy, Lindsay, Macy; 7 grandsons; Ricky, Daniel, Andrew, Jason, Brandon, Ethan, Nick; and 13 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ida is preceded in death by 1 grandson; Cody Reed; 3 brothers; Harry Shaffer, Newton Larson, Joe Larson; and 2 sisters; Freda Bassett, and Christine Rickard.

Family and friends will be received on Friday, May 12, 2017, from 2 – 4pm and 6 – 8pm, at the McKinney – d’Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA, 15825.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Calvary Church of the Nazarene, 110 Evans St., Brookville, PA, 15825, beginning at 11:00am, and officiated by Rev. Gary Smith.

Interment will take place at the Emerickville Church of God Cemetery, Pine Creek Twp., Jefferson Co., PA.

Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Calvary Church of the Nazarene, or to the Jefferson Manor, 417 Route 28 N., Brookville, PA, 15825.
