James K. Fugate, Sr.

1380587_profile_picJames K. Fugate, Sr., MD, 84, passed on to eternal life with our Lord Savior Jesus Christ on August 22, 2014, at
Punxsutawney Area Hospital.

He was born May 7, 1930, in DuBois, Pennsylvania to the late Howard Fugate Sr. and Sarah Kathryn Fugate (née Kethledge) and was raised in Sykesville, Pennsylvania.

He was married to Mary Hanna who survives him.

James was a 1948 graduate of Sykesville High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science degree from the Pennsylvania State University in 1952. In 1956, he received his medical degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. After medical school, James acquired an internship at Huron Road Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. He then served as a lieutenant in the United States Navy Medical Corps. James served the Punxsutawney community for eight years before leaving the area and becoming a board-certified psychiatrist from the Rollman Psychiatric Institute in Cincinnati, Ohio. For thirty-four years thereafter, he dedicated his medical practice to compassionate, exemplary service and established modern community mental health services to the residents of Clearfield and Jefferson Counties.

He was a man of faith and a long time active member of the First United Methodist Church in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. He taught Sunday School for 45 years, served on various committees, and was a member of the chancel choir. He had a love for the Word of God. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. In addition, James was an avid Penn State football fan and enjoyed all sports.

In addition to his wife of 65 years, his surviving relatives include five sons and a daughter; John H. Fugate, MD and wife Carolyn of Minneapolis, MN, James K. Fugate, Jr., MD and wife Theresa of DuBois, PA, Jacquelyn Fugate Smith and husband Daniel Smith of Leominster, MA, Mark H. Fugate, PhD and wife Carolyn of Alfred Station, NY, Douglas S. Fugate, MD and wife Beth of Punxsutawney, PA, and Joel T. Fugate and wife Kimberly of Punxsutawney, PA; seventeen grandchildren, Jason and wife Rachel, Jonathan and wife Kelly, Thomas, Timothy, Elizabeth, Mary, Daniel, Rebekah, Rachel, Hannah, Sarah, Nathaniel and wife Holly, Isaac, Caleb, and Luke Fugate, Steven and Kathyrn Smith; and four great-grandchildren, Elanor, Evan, John, and Noemi Fugate. Other relative include his brother Howard Fugate, Jr. MD.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday, August 23, 2014 and from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2014 at the Deeley Funeral Home in Punxsutawney. Friends will also be received prior to the funeral service from 9 to 10 a.m., Monday August 25, 2014 at the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, August 25, 2014, at the First United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney with Pastor Paul Ritchey officiating.

Interment will be in Lakelawn Memorial Park, Reynoldsville.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the First United Methodist Church, Child Evangelism Fellowship of Jefferson County, or to Asera Care Hospice.
