Jefferson County Solid Waste Authority Getting New Recycling Truck

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) — At Wednesday’s Jefferson County Commissioners meeting, they voted unanimously to advance more than a quarter million dollars to the Solid Waste Authority for its recycling program.

The $265,236.00 will be used to buy a recycling truck.

Donna Cooper, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Authority, explained the importance of the truck.

“It will allow us to more efficiently and economically pick up the recycling containers at the drop-off sites,” Cooper said.

Cooper said she hopes to have the new containers put out between May and June.

The county will be reimbursed by the authority whenever it receives the money from the state Department of Environmental Protection.

The commissioners voted to adopt a resolution to apply for a Greenways, Trails, and Recreation Program in the amount of $7,914.74 from the Commonwealth Financing Authority to be used for updates to Veterans Park in Big Run.

The money will be used by the Big Run Youth Baseball Association, which is providing a matching grant of $1,300.00 to improve the field.

“There will be batting cages, field enhancements, electric scoreboard, and storage facility. It is not only for youth to use, but the public to use as well,” said Jefferson County Development Council Director Brad Lashinsky.

He said the work might be able to be completed sometime this summer if the grant is awarded.

The commissioners also approved two grant applications that were submitted by the county’s Hotel Tax Committee.

One was for $2,000.00 to the Cook Forest Vacation Bureau for printing and distribution of the 2017 brochure.

The second was for $1,998.00 to the Jefferson County Historical Society for television marketing.

All county offices are closed Friday in observance of Good Friday.

The next commissioners meeting is at 10:30 a.m., on Tuesday, April 25. The county jail board will meet at 11:00 a.m.
