BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) &#8211The Jefferson County Department of Emergency Services (DES) issued a response to concerns expressed about an Active Shooter Drill carried out at Brookville Area High School on Tuesday morning, June 17, 2014.

The following statement was issued by Jefferson County DES about the drill:

“An Active Shooter Drill was held this morning at the Brookville Area High School. The drill was designed to test internal protocol designed by School Administrators aimed at protecting students and staff from these types of Acts of Aggression.”

“The exercise was not designed to put fear into student and staff, but to prepare them in the unlikely event these types of scenarios may occur at any school building and what to do to keep them safe. No students were involved in today’s exercise, only staff and administrators.”

“It is also designed to test local first response procedures currently in place and to identify any gaps and shortcomings that may be needed to improve the operational response. It’s used as a learning mechanism.”

“The School Administration has worked closely with our office and all of the emergency response agencies to have in place a plan for the protection and overall safety of all students and staff. It was announced many times that it was a drill only via radio, media, phone and other means.”

“We know that there have been some negative comments posted about this exercise today through social media. If it was up to us, we would like nothing more than not to have to train for these types of incidents. It is unfortunate that with today’s society that we have to do this such thing.”

“Whatever the case is, it is our passion to do our part in protecting the community and educating you on steps that you can take to protect yourself. We stand committed to our duty. We will continue to work with our School Administrations and First Responders to be in that ready state.”
