Joan Clydette (Mumau) Oberlin, age 74, of Brookville PA, passed away of natural causes on Friday, March 10, 2017, at her home.
Joan was born on February 11, 1943, to the late Joseph Lee and Bertha R. (Ferrier) Mumau, in East Run, Indiana Co., PA.
Joan graduated from the Marion Center High School with the class of 1961. She immediately went to Washington D.C. where she spent some time working for the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
After about a year of working there, the love of her life, James “Jim” D. Oberlin, was discharged from the United States Army and returned home to Pennsylvania. Joan left her job, came back to PA, and on April 28, 1962, Jim and Joan were married in Rochester Hills, PA. After almost 55 years of working side by side, Jim survives her.
After they were married, Joan dedicated her time to raising her children and keep up the house for her whole family. Her main concern has always been her family. When the children were old enough to be independent she started working again.
She worked at the Jefferson County Court House in Brookville, PA until 1996 when she and Jim both retired.
Shortly after they retired they picked up a family business that Jim primarily ran, but Joan rode shotgun wherever the work took them; she always supported the efforts of moving her family forward.
She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren; it seemed like nothing brought her more joy than them.
Other activities she loved to do with her family include camping, traveling, and attending sporting events and other extracurricular activities that they were involved with.
She was an avid lover of nature, but most especially birds. She would take care of them as much as possible and even the wild birds would eat right from her hands.
She loved taking pictures and she has thousands of photos involving her family, but she was always behind the camera.
She took special care and much time creating a yearly calendar highlighting the family events; these calendars are cherished by them all.
Her faith was important to her as well and she was a member of the Brookville Presbyterian Church for over 38 years.
She was also a past Worthy Matron with the Order of Eastern Star in Brookville, and a District Deputy supporting the Rainbow Girls.
Her family was the most important aspect of her life, and they all deeply miss her.
In addition to her husband Jim, Joan is survived by 1 daughter; Theresa (Greg) Humes of Erie, PA; 2 sons; Stephen (Heather) Oberlin of Erie, PA; John (Pamela) Oberlin of DuBois, PA; 3 granddaughters; Megan Humes, Emily Humes, Kaitlyn Oberlin; 4 grandsons; Cory Oberlin, Zachary Oberlin, John Oberlin Jr., Jimmy Oberlin; 1 great-granddaughter; Kira Oberlin; 1 great-grandson; Rhys Oberlin; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
In addition to her parents, Joan is preceded in death by 3 brothers; Darl, Earl, and Roy Mumau; 2 sisters; Phyllis Lukehart, Patricia Thompson; and her step-father; Blaine Dick.
Family and friends will received on Wednesday, March 15, 2017, from 4 – 8pm, at the McKinney – d’Argy Funeral Home, ltd, 345 Main St., Brookville, PA, 15825.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, March 16, 2017, also at the funeral home, beginning at 11:00am, and officiated by Rev. J. Ray Baker.
Interment will take place at Pine Grove Cemetery, Indiana Co., PA.
Memorial contributions are encouraged to be made in her name to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
