John Edward Thomas

John Edward Thomas, 73, of Brockway, passed away in his sleep at the Jefferson Manor Nursing Home in Brookville on 09/11/2021 after protracted health problems.

John was born October 10, 1947, in Lackawanna, New York, a son of the late Frank Edward Thomas and Elsie (Hagenan) Thomas.

After serving two years in the US Army, John was honorably discharged from the service in January of 1971. He was a veteran of the Vietnam war and received the Bronze Star, Air medal, Good Conduct medal, Overseas Bar, National Defense Service Medal, Expert Badges for the M-14 and M-16.

Having served his country, he lived his life on his own terms and worked at various businesses and occupations in Dunkirk, NY until moving to Punxsutawney, PA in 1999. He resided in Brockway during the last 8 years of his life.

He is survived by four sisters: Patricia Poth (Robert) of West Seneca, NY; Mary Synor (Paul) of Elma, NY.; Shirley Fleckenstein (Patrick) of Punxsutawney, PA; and Jeanne Carpentieri (Ralph) of West Seneca, NY. He has one surviving brother, Edward Thomas (Maureen) of Buffalo, NY in addition to many nieces and nephews.

He was proceeded in death by his parents Elsie Hageman Thomas and Frank E. Thomas Sr. and by brothers George Thomas and Frank E. Thomas, Jr.

Friends will be received at the funeral home from 12 noon until 2 pm Tuesday, September 14, 2021, at Shumaker Funeral Home, Punxsutawney.

A blessing service will be held at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, celebrated by Monsignor Kaza.

Interment will follow at the Circle Hill Cemetery.
