John K. “Skip” Lorentz Sr.

John K. “Skip” Lorentz Sr. age 93 a long time Brockway, PA resident died on Saturday, October 09, 2021.

Born on February 20, 1928 in Sutton, WV; he was the son of the late Fred and Anna Newton Lorentz.

On August 20, 1954 he was married to Connie White and she preceded him in death on June 25, 2005.

John was a graduate of Sutton High School, class of 1945 and was the first Eagle Scout of Braxton County, Troop 136 in Sutton, WV.

He graduated from West Virginia University and Penn State University.

John moved to Brockway when he was offered the Recreation Director Position at the Brockway School, where he was responsible for planning playground and outdoor recreation for area students for many years.

Although he had a degree in English, coming from West Virginia, he jokingly said he may not be the wisest choice to teach Pennsylvania kids English.

John would eventually be offered the positions of High School Health/Physical Education teacher and the Audio-Visual Aids Director.

John believed in the “Old School of discipline” teaching children to respect their teachers and authority figures.

Many students have shared stories learned early in their lives, that the “Board of Education” did not hurt them so much, but was a good attention getter.

John also was a Hunter Safety Instructor and he drove the school bus, mostly in the evenings, for all the High School sports teams.

He retired after spending 35 years at the Brockway Area High School.

John also served as Master of Ceremonies for many years at the Brockway 4th of July Parade.

He was a Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War serving from 1950 until 1956.

John was a member of Parson-Marnati Post #95 of the American Legion, a 50 year member of the Strange Creek Lodge No. 130 in Strange Creek, WV; and was a member of the Scottish Rite Freemasonry Valley of Coudersport.

He enjoyed having a good time and dancing with his wife, hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, playing cards and reading especially the newspaper.

He kept himself physically fit into his older years by riding his bike down rails to trails and jogging.

He is survived by a son John K. (Darlene) Lorentz Jr. also of Brockway; 2 daughters: Ruth Ann Lorentz of Falls Creek, PA and Carrie Lorentz of North Carolina. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife he is also preceded in death by a brother Joe Lorentz, 2 sisters: Helen Pierson; Ruth Lorentz, and a granddaughter Carly Lorentz.

All services for John will be private at the convenience of the family.
