John Richard Sankey

John Richard Sankey, born February 26, 1930 in Clearfield to Helen (Thompson) and Clyde G. Sankey.

He married Dortha A. Bell on September 27, 1962 in Bells Landing, PA.

She preceded him in death along with his parents, an infant sister, and two brothers, Franklin G. Sankey and C. George Sankey.

John is survived by a son James R. Sankey, and a daughter Valerie A. Sankey-Flegal and her husband James Flegal.

Mr. Sankey served in the United States Army where he fought in the Korean War.

He was a member of the Goshen United Methodist Church, Clearfield American Legion John Lewis Shade Post #6, and Sparkling Springs Hunting Camp.

John was a life long dairy farmer who owned and operated Sanview Farm in Goshen Township with his wife and son.

Mr. Sankey was involved over the years in the Pennsylvania Farmers Association, Farm Service Agency Board, Goshen Township, and Agway Committee.

He was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of the United Electric Co-op for many terms.

John was one of the first farmers in Clearfield County to erect a Harvestore Silo for crop storage.

He and Dortha coordinated and hosted the first few harvestore picnics for harvestore owners in Clearfield County.

John was very involved with the Clearfield 4H Dairy Club and the Clearfield FFA Chapter when his children were members.

He was among the founding members of the 4H and FFA Junior Livestock Sale, which continues today.

John enjoyed square dancing, and he and his wife were members of the Clearfield Square Dance Club.

He also enjoyed hunting, fly fishing, reading Louis L’Amour western novels, and watching John Wayne movies.

Mr. Sankey was happiest when working on the farm with his son.

He will be remembered for his hard work ethic and his humorous remarks and quips.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at the Goshen United Methodist Church at 11 AM with Rev. Ken Leonard officiating.

Military honors will be accorded at the church by the members of the Clearfield Honor Guard.

Friends will be received on Friday at the Kevin A. Beardsley Funeral Home, Clearfield, from 5-9 PM, and Saturday at the church from 10 AM until the time of services.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Goshen United Methodist Church, PO Box 162, Shawville, PA 16873.
