John Zissis

John Zissis, age 87, of New Bethlehem, passed away Thursday afternoon, October 16, 2014 at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh, following an illness.

Born June 25, 1927 in Pittsburgh, he was a son of the late Frank and Anna Zissis.

He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving during World War II. He was honorably discharged in July of 1946.

John was and elementary school teacher and retired from the Redbank Valley School District. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #522 , L.O.O.M., F.O.E, , V.F.W. and American Legion Clubs all of New Bethlehem.

He was an avid golfer and sports fan.

John is survived by his wife, the former Beverly “Deane” Kahle, who he married on August 26, 1956 and their daughter, Jana Lyons and her husband, Bill, of Pittsburgh.

Also surviving is a brother, Tony Zissis and his wife, Espy, of Pittsburgh.

In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, George.

Family and friends will be received from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2014 at the Rupert Funeral Home and Cremation Service Chapel, 233 Penn Street, New Bethlehem.

Immediately following calling hours, everyone is invited and encouraged to attend a reception and time of fellowship in John’s memory at the New Bethlehem MOOSE Lodge basement, 440 Broad Street, New Bethlehem.

In Lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given in the name of John Zissis to the Redbank Valley Public Library, 720 Broad Street, New Bethlehem, PA 16242; Tri-County Animal Rescue, 9562 Route 322, Shippenville, PA 16254; Clarion PAWS, 22592 Route 68, Clarion, PA 16214 or an animal rescue organization of donor’s choice.
