Joseph A. Allen

Joseph A. Allen, 97, of Distant, died Thursday afternoon, May 14, 2015 at Jefferson Manor in Brookville. Born November 8, 1917 in Distant and son of the late Harry and Kitty (Wells) Allen. On August 21, 1946, he married Helen J. (Doverspike) and was married for almost 69 years.

Joe attended the Oakland Church of God in Distant. He served his country during World War II with the United States Army from March 7, 1941 to November 20, 1945 as an Aerial Engineer. He worked as a truck mechanic for Union Carbide in Kittanning. He was a member of the Walter W. Craig Post # 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem.

Joe is survived by his wife Helen J. Allen of Distant, four children; Robert J. Allen and his wife Delores of Hamilton, Michigan, Donald L. Allen and his wife Carle of Thomas Mills, Linda J. Ferringer of New Bethlehem and Jeffrey P. Allen and his wife Lynn of Westlake, Ohio, five grandchildren; Joseph Allen, Elizabeth Westra (Howard), Vanessa Elston (Nate), Pamela Ferringer and Thomas Ferringer, four step grandchildren; Nick, Ben, Margaret and Janet, four great grandchildren, six step great grandchildren, a sister, Esther Beatty of Homosassa, Florida, and a sister-in-law, Lillian Allen of Newton Falls, Ohio.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gerald L. Allen, a grandson, Jason Allen and Jason’s fiancee’, Lindsey Cutshall, a great grandson, Caleb Westra, two sisters, Mary Allen and Juliet McDowell, and five brothers; Von, Wade, Paul “Tip”, Harry and John Allen.

Visitation will be on Sunday, May 17, 2015, from 2 – 8 at the Oakland Church of God in Distant. The funeral service will be held on Monday, May 18, 2015 at 1:00 pm at the church with Pastor Jimmy Swogger officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, The Walter W. Craig Post # 354 American Legion of New Bethlehem will honor their fallen comrade. Interment will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Distant.
