Joseph R. Spader, Sr.

Joseph R.”Paydirt” Spader, Sr., 80, of Turtlepoint, PA., passed away on Friday, May 11, at Lake View Nursing Home in Smethport, PA.

Born on April 12, 1938, in Punxsutawney, PA., he was the son of “Sandy” Santi and Helen (Baney) Spader, Sr.

Joe was a hard worker all of this life. He started out working in his father’s coal mine at the age of 14. He served in the Army National Guard for nine years. Later on, his entrepreneurship spirit showed through. He started his own successful excavating business, as well as a trucking and salvage business.

In his spare time, Joe thoroughly enjoyed hunting, fishing, and excursions to Canada.

He is survived by his longtime loving companion Lois Baker of Turtlepoint; Five sons: Joe (Deb) Spader, Jr. of Lebanon, PA., David Spader and Terry Spader both of Port Allegany, PA., Michael Spader of Punxsutawney, and Ernie Spader of New Jersey; daughters Brenda Mowery, Tammy Spader of Port Allegany, Carrie (Tommy) Vigeant of Lancaster, PA., and Shelly Albany of Port Allegany; and a stepson Ron Gustin of Pittsburgh. Also surviving are 15 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Barb Sitosky and Mary Lou Kessler.

He was preceded in death by three brothers: George, Peter and Sandy Spader, Jr .

A memorial service honoring Joe’s life will be held on Saturday, May 26, at 1:00 p.m. in the Open Arms Community Church at the corner of Smith and Church Street, Port Allegany.
