Judith Ann Britten

Judith Ann Britten, RN, 74, of 61 Rattlesnake Rd, Brockway, passed away Tuesday evening, March 29, 2016, at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

She was surrounded by her loving husband and children at the time of her passing.

Born October 19, 1941 in Brisbin, PA, she was the daughter of the late Raymond Frederick and Louise Jane (Anderson) Tompkins. She graduated from Rahway High School in Rahway, NJ in 1959. She graduated from Philipsburg Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a nurse at Williamsport Hospital until her marriage.

She married Dr. Jack Lee Britten, DDS, on October 18, 1963. They had three children: Tracey (Richard) Dusch, Stephanie (Christopher) Benson, and David (Marcy) Britten, all of Brockway and four grandchildren: Andrew and Anthony Benson and Chanice and Chanell Britten all of Brockway. She is also survived by a younger brother, Raymond Frederick (Karen) Tompkins of Newton, NJ, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two sisters, Marcia Sebulsky and Betty Ann Biggs.

She lived in Morgantown, WV and Governor’s Island, NY before moving to Brockway in 1969. She was Presbyterian by faith and was a member of Brockway Presbyterian Church.

Judy enjoyed knitting and sewing, often making scarves and quilts, and she was an avid reader. She was also fond of playing bridge and enjoyed cooking and baking. She attended countless sporting events and high school theatrical productions to watch her grandchildren. Judy was an enduring presence on the sidelines at football and soccer games, tennis matches, and in the bleachers during wrestling matches and volleyball games. She was an active member of the Psi Chapter of The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, BAESPA, PSEA, and The Brockway Progressive Women’s Club. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her family and she was very proud of her grandchildren.

Judy was very active in the lives of her grandchildren, but she was also a big part of the lives of other children. She worked for The Brockway Area School District for 26 years, first as a parent volunteer at Brockway Elementary School before becoming a teacher’s aide and was loved by all of the children she helped. She will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and the many children whose lives she enriched.

Arrangements are under the direction of Carlson-Shugarts Funeral Home in Brockway. Viewing hours will be held from 2-4 and 6-8 Friday evening. A Funeral Service with be held at 10 am Saturday morning at St. Tobias Church with The Rev. Msgr. Charles Kaza officiating.

Burial will follow in St. Tobias Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Brockway Area High School Student Loan Fund.
