Karen Harshman

Karen Harshman, 77, of Punxsutawney, peacefully passed into her next life with the Lord on Thursday, December 17, 2020, at Mulberry Square.

She was born on Friday, January 1, 1943, in Punxsutawney, a daughter of the late Jane (Shirley) and Dalvin Rowland.

On June 24, 1967, she married James S Harshman. He preceded her in death on November 20, 2006, they were married for 39 years.

Karen was a woman who loved the Lord and enjoyed her life despite her physical difficulties of Cerebral Palsy.

Karen graduated from Punxsutawney Area High School in 1962, in which she received the coveted Class Hearts for that year. She was active in the Punxsy Girl Scouts where she received the Curve Bar (the highest achievable award in girl scouting).

She worked as a Secretary’s Assistant at the Easter Seals Clinic in Punxsy until her retirement and marriage in 1967. She then moved to Southington, OH, where she and Jimmy made their home for 40 years. A lover of the outdoors, Karen enjoyed camping and taking long Sunday drives with her husband. She was also very talented at needlepoint and stitchery, and made many as gifts for friends and family.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Punxsutawney, where she was married. Karen enjoyed attending church and Sunday School, as well as spending time with her sister in law, family, and friends. The annual festival in the park was one of her favorite summertime activities, along with music in the park.

Karen moved to the Mahoning Towers in 2007, where she attended Tower tenet association meetings and bible study. She served as the Towers Church Secretary and attended all the dinners held there. She loved her apartment and enjoyed visiting the residents and their dogs in the lobby area.

She is survived by her 2 sisters in law, Dee Dee Rowland, and LaRue Harshman; her nieces and nephew, Dana Williams, Leslie Weiser, and Matthew Rowland; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins in Ohio, Texas, and Pennsylvania.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Alan Rowland.

Friends will be received from 10:00AM to 12:00PM on Saturday, December 26, 2020. There will also be a private funeral service to follow.

The funeral home requests that all visitors wear appropriate masks and maintain social distancing as per the latest mandates from Governor Wolf. It is also mandatory that only 10 people will be permitted to visit at a given time although all visitors will be permitted to have time to say their final farewell to Karen.

Interment will be in Circle Hill Cemetery, Punxsutawney.
