Laird H. Powell

pic of laird02107020151207132135_001Laird H. Powell, 84, of Punxsutawney (Porter), died Sunday morning, December 6, 2015 at his home.

He was born on April 7, 1931 in Porter, Jefferson County, the son of the late Charles I. and Arveda I. (McDivitt) Powell. He was married on June 5, 1953 to the former Esther Jane (Yeaney) and she preceded him in death on May 29, 2011.

Laird served his country with the United States Army during the Korean War from October 1952 to October 1954. He, along with his wife, owned the North Freedom General Store in North Freedom. He was also was a banker for the Dayton Bank where he retired. Laird was a member of the Porter United Methodist Church, the American Legion in Punxsutawney and the New Bethlehem Lodge #522 F & AM.

He is survived by two sons, Douglas Powell of North Freedom and Donald Powell and his wife Candi of Ringgold, five grandchildren, Erica Mingle and her husband Ed, Marci Reitz and her husband Adam, Charles Powell, Taylor Powell, and Jordyn Powell, eight great grandchildren, and four sister-in-laws, Debbie Porter of Punxsutawney, Mrs. Howard Donna Yeaney of Reynoldsville, Mrs. William Donna Yeaney of Punxsutawney, and Kay Yeaney of California.

In addition to his parents and his wife Esther Jane Powell, Laird was also preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Roxie Powell.

Visitation will be on Tuesday, December 8, 2015 from 6 – 9 and on Wednesday, December 9, from 2 – 4 and 6 – 9 at the Alcorn Funeral Home in Hawthorn. The funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 10, 2015 at 11:00 am from the Porter United Methodist Church with Pastor Ken Alt officiating. Immediately following the funeral service, military honors will be accorded him by the American Legion. Interment will be at the Zion Cemetery in Porter Twp. Jefferson County.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Porter United Methodist Church or the Ringgold Volunteer Fire Dept. and Qrs.
