Major Mildred M. Furlong

Millie2Major Mildred M. Furlong, (U.S. Army Retired), 97, of Tavares, FL (formerly of Clarion, PA) died peacefully on November 23, 2015 with her nephew and his wife (Ron and Delene Furlong) and friend, Carol Murphy, by her side at the Mike Conley Hospice House in Clermont, FL.

Millie born August 21, 1918 in Clarion, PA; she was the daughter of the late Dale A. and Adda M. (Smith) Furlong.

She was a 1940 graduate of West Penn Hospital School of Nursing, and enlisted in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in December 1942.  Millie was with the 58th General Hospital which shipped to the European Theater in July 1943.  She was part of a 4 person “shock team” in a tented unit treating fresh casualties from the battle field in preparation for surgery at the larger tent hospital.  This was the precursor to the MASH hospitals.

She served in many parts of the world during a 25 year military career including a  stint at an evacuation tent hospital in Korea.

After retirement, she spent 25 summers travelling by RV with her parents throughout the USA, visiting family and friends.

Millie was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Tavares, FL and a life member of the VFW, American Legion, Military Officers Association of America, and Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include a sister, Helen (Chuck) Goble of Bradford, PA; a brother, Dale A. Furlong, Jr. of California; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin brother, Merle; a brother, Lou Furlong; and sisters, Louise Crissman and Doris Simon.

She will be deeply missed by her family and many, many friends.

Millie’s family would like to extend their thanks and appreciation to Cornerstone Hospice for providing exceptional care, comfort, and compassion during her illness.

At her request there will be no funeral services.  Interment with military honors will be in the Tavares  Cemetery, Lake County, FL on Wednesday, December 16, 2015 at 2 PM.
