This case is working its way through the court system.

Details of the case:

According to a criminal complaint, on Friday, April 27, Officer Johnson and Officer Cole of the Sandy Township Police Department were dispatched, by Clearfield County Control (CCC), to a residence on West Long Avenue for a domestic incident.

The complaint states that the officers were advised by CCC that there was a disturbance between Andrew Vargas and his mother, who both reside at the residence. CCC advised that Vargas had called them and reported the incident, stating there may be possible mental health issues regarding his mother. Officer Johnson also dispatched an EMS unit to arrive at the scene.

According to the complaint, upon arrival, the officers found the victim, Vargas’s mother, was inside of the EMS Ambulance in front of the house. Officer Johnson noted he could view several injuries to the victim and she was bleeding from the top of her head and also bleeding from her wrist. He also noted the victim’s wrist appeared swollen and an EMS worker advised there was a gash on her head.

The victim was later transported, by EMS, to Penn Highlands Hospital for treatment of her injuries.

The victim stated that her son had hit her repeatedly with what she called a lightsaber. She described the saber as a stick and stated that Vargas had many of them. She stated that she was sitting in the dining room on a chair when Vargas began striking her with the saber in the head, on her back/neck area, and on her wrist. The victim was crying at times and stated she “is not taking this abuse anymore”. The victim could not say why Vargas struck her with the saber.

The officers were advised that Vargas had gone to Q Care to try to get treated for his medical condition. The complaint states that the officers met with Vargas in the parking lot and advised him of their findings. According to the complaint, Vargas denied hitting his mother and stated that she was hitting herself and that she has many issues.

Vargas was then advised he was under arrest for the domestic battery and was handcuffed and placed in the rear of Officer Johnson’s patrol vehicle.
