Man Faces Strangulation Charges in Jefferson County

BROCKWAY BOROUGH, Pa. (EYT) – A 28-year-old man is facing felony strangulation and related charges following an incident that occurred last week in Brockway Borough.

According to court documents, DuBois-based State Police filed the following criminal charges against 28-year-old Brent Richard Cousins Jr., of Kersey:

– Strangulation – Applying Pressure to Throat or Neck, Felony 1
– Simple Assault, Misdemeanor 2
– Harassment – Subject Other to Physical Contact, Summary

The charges stem from an assault that occurred around 1:10 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, near the intersection of 9th Avenue and Main Street in Brockway Borough involving Brent Cousins.

A criminal complaint was filed by Trooper Blaniar, of PSP DuBois, on Monday, May 6.

According to the complaint, the incident occurred in Brent Cousins’ vehicle – a 2016 Ford SUV – that was parked across the street from the victim’s apartment on Brockway Borough. Trooper Blaniar responded to the known victim’s apartment around 1:30 p.m.

The victim stated that she and Cousins were engaged in an argument regarding burn marks Cousins had left in her apartment. The victim was sitting in the back seat on the driver’s side of the SUV, and Cousins was sitting in the driver’s seat. Through the course of the argument, Cousins allegedly grabbed the victim’s right arm and twisted it backward leaving red marks, the complaint states.

Cousins then allegedly proceeded to grab the victim’s neck and applied pressure to both sides of her neck to the point she couldn’t breathe. It is alleged that Cousins continued to hold her in that position as he pulled her from the back seat over the front center console, according to the complaint.

Trooper Blaniar observed red marks on both sides of the victim’s neck consistent to her description of the incident. Photographs of the injuries to the victim’s neck and right arm were taken.

Cousins was arraigned at 9:20 p.m. on May 5 in Magisterial District Judge Douglas Robert Chambers’ office.

Unable to post $25,000.00 monetary bail, he was lodged in Jefferson County Jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on May 16 in front of Magisterial District Judge David B. Inzana.
