Motorists Urged to Heed Weather Forecasts for Super Bowl Sunday

HARRISBURG, Pa. – With the potential for several inches to a foot of snow in Pennsylvania on Super Bowl Sunday, PennDOT today urged drivers to watch weather forecasts and be prepared to change any travel plans.

The department also reminded motorists that if they do travel on Sunday they should designate a sober driver ahead of time.

“Many people celebrate with friends and family for the Super Bowl, but no matter the day we need to think safety first,” Acting PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards said. “Drivers should be prepared to stay home if conditions warrant, but regardless of what weather comes, people should never drive impaired by drugs or alcohol.”

PennDOT data shows that last year in Pennsylvania on Super Bowl Sunday there were 287 crashes, with two fatalities in those crashes. Seventeen of the crashes were alcohol-related.

In the event of winter weather, PennDOT crews will be out before and throughout the storm but roads will not be bare while snow is falling. During storms, interstates and expressways are PennDOT’s primary focus and equipment may be redirected to these routes during significant winter events. Plow trucks will also be slowed when facing heavy precipitation or when many other vehicles are also on roadways. This means that during heavier storms, motorists may find deeper accumulations on less-traveled routes and should adjust their driving for those conditions.

To help decide whether to travel, motorists can “Know Before You Go” with 511PA, the state’s free traveler information service. Conditions on more than 40,000 roadway miles, including color-coded winter conditions on 2,900 miles, are available at 511PA, which is free and available 24 hours a day, provides traffic delay warnings, weather forecasts, traffic speed information and access to more than 700 traffic cameras.

511PA is also available through a smartphone application for iPhone and Android devices, by calling 5-1-1, or by following regional Twitter alerts accessible on the 511PA website.
