Norene Burns, 87, of 14329 Rt. 68 Sligo, died Friday March 13, 2015 at her home following a period of failing health.
Born in Sligo on December 30, 1927, she was the daughter of Clair and Estella Craig Elliott. Norene was married on June 15, 1945 to Thomas R. Burns, Sr. who died December 14, 2013.
For many years she was involved with her husband’s dairy farm, providing food for all the workers and was also instrumental in the operation of Burns Trucking. Norene also worked for 30 years at the former Owens-Illinois Glass Plant in Clarion, retiring in 1987. She was a member of the Sligo Presbyterian Church, belonged to a Sligo Area Ladies’ Card Club, and attended the Home Extension Ladies’ Day Out. Over the years she and her husband hosted many picnics for the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. Norene enjoyed making cross stitch quilts and crocheting afghans for her family and friends. ”
She is survived by three sons; Thomas R. Burns, Jr. of Sligo, Steve Burns and wife Wendy of Curllsville, and Randy Burns and wife Trudi of Callensburg, 11 grandchildren; Greg Burns and friend Amanda, Doug Burns and wife Janet, Robbie Burns, Clint Burns and wife Dusty, Stephanie Frances and husband Ronnie, Billy Burns and wife Abby, Clay Burns, Shawn Burns, Randon Burns Jr., Katie Mullet and husband Mason, and Brian Burns and wife Lori, and four great-grandsons; Nathaniel, Carter, Caden, and Elliott.
In addition to her parents and husband shewas preceded in death by four brothers; Craig, Jack, Robert, and William Elliott and a grandson Thomas R. Burns III.
Norene’s family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday March 16, 2015 at the Varner Funeral Home, 1632 Bald Eagle St. Sligo. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday from the Sligo Presbyterian Church with Rev. Stephanie Weaver, Rev. Larry Piper, and the Rev. Randy Evans, officiating. Interment will follow in the Grandview Cemetery in Sligo.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Sligo Presbyterian Church or the Clarion-Forest VNA Hospice.
