Driver Distracted by Radio, Crashes on Route 322

UNION TOWNSHIP, Pa. (EYT) – According to Punxsutawney-based State Police, around 10:40 a.m. on June 16, a one-car accident occurred on State Route 322, 246′ east of Alexander Ln., in Union Township, Jefferson County.

Police say 32-year-old Melanie J. Theiss, of Strattanville, was traveling east on SR 322 in a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo and reportedly took her eyes off the road to change the radio station.

Her vehicle traveled off the right side of the roadway and onto the dirt shoulder; she over-corrected the car when attempting to bring it back onto the road causing her to lose control, according to police.

The front portion of the car impacted the guard rails off the eastbound berm causing the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise. The rear portion of the car then impacted the guard rails, and the car came to rest facing northeast with the right rear corner of the car in contact with the guard rails, police say.

Theiss and her 11-year-old male passenger were using seat belts, and no injuries were reported.

The vehicle sustained disabling damage and had to be towed from the scene.

Theiss was charged with a traffic violation.

Corsica Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
