One Killed in Wrong Way Crash on I-80; Two Flown to Altoona

policeWASHINGTON TWP., Pa (EYT) – DuBois-based State Police say a fatal crash occurred late last night on Interstate 80 westbound, in Washington Township, Jefferson County.

According to police, this crash occurred around 11:19 p.m. as a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado – driven by a 73-year-old Ohio man – was traveling east on I-80, and a 2017 Volvo Truck – driven by a 55-year-old California man – was traveling west on I-80 near the 94 mile marker in Washington Township.

The Silverado left the north side of the eastbound lanes, traveled through the median, and entered the westbound lanes traveling east for approximately one mile.

The driver of the Volvo was traveling west when he observed the Silverado traveling the wrong way on the interstate highway. He tried to stop; however, he was unable to do so. The vehicles collided.

The Silverado spun 180 degrees after impact and came to a final rest facing west in the right lane with disabling damage. The Silverado was hauling a trailer with a boat. The trailer became disconnected during the crash and came to a rest at the guide rails west of the impact. The boat came off the trailer and became attached to the front engine area of the Volvo.

The Volvo came to a final rest west of the point of impact off the left side of the roadway with major damage to the front engine area.

The driver of the Silverado suffered fatal injuries from the crash.

The operator of the Volvo and his passenger – a 58-year-old California man – were flown to Altoona to be treated for suspected injuries.

The driver of the Silverado and the operator of the Volvo were using seat belts.

The passenger of the Volvo was in the sleeping area during the crash.

The Silverado was removed from the scene by Zimmerman’s Towing.

The Volvo was towed by Bricen’s Towing.

The names of the individuals involved in the crash were not released.

Members of Pennsylvania State Police DuBois Station; Falls Creek, Sandy Township, and Reynoldsville Fire Departments; and DuSan Ambulance Service assisted at the scene.
