Ora Mae Kennis

Ora Mae (Shepler) Kennis, 94, of Punxsutawney, passed away Saturday, April 18, 2015, at her residence, after a lengthy illness.

She was born Dec. 28, 1920, in Big Run, the daughter to the late Amos C. and Catherine (Weiss) Shepler.

She married John R. Kennis on May 4, 1946. He preceded her in death in 2012.

Ora is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Sally) Long of Punxsutawney; a sister, Alta Rimer of New York; two grandchildren, Ryan Opdyke and wife Ana of Elk Ridge, Maryland and Megan and husband John Long of Mechanicsburg, Pa.; and two great-grandchildren, McKenna and Logan Opdyke of Elk Ridge, Maryland.

Ora was a 1938 graduate of Big Run High School and attended DuBois Business College for one year. She worked in the War Department in Military Intelligence at the Pentagon during World War II. She also worked for Standard Pennant Company in Big Run for 40 years, as well as being a farmer’s wife.

Ora was a member of Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church in Sykesville. She enjoyed gardening, canning and crocheting. She lived all her life in Henderson Township.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, April 21, 2015, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at the Leo Nedza Funeral Home in Sykesville.

Parastos will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Divine Liturgy of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Byzantine Catholic Church in Sykesville, with Fr. Robert Karl officiating.

Interment will follow in Lakelawn Memorial Park in Reynoldsville.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Leo Nedza Funeral Home in Sykesville.
