PA Department of Labor & Industry Releases Pennsylvania Career Guides

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Career Guide, produced annually by the Department of Labor and Industry (L&I), has helped students and job seekers alike explore career options for nearly 25 years.

This year marks the first time the publication is being split into two editions, one targeted to middle school students and one to those in high school.

The guides are designed to introduce students to the wide variety of careers awaiting them after they complete high school and college. Information in the publications is geared toward helping students prepare for continuing education and/or the workforce.

“The Pennsylvania Career Guide has long served as a great tool to explore career options,” said L&I acting Secretary Kathy Manderino. “Now with separate middle and high school editions, these guides will foster students’ career interests earlier and to a greater degree than ever before.”

Both the high school and middle school editions present students with a brief interest assessment that matches students to career paths fitting their hobbies and personalities. The middle school edition focuses on introducing students to different career ideas and the realities of careers in high profile professions such as sports and entertainment. The high school edition offers a more comprehensive and detailed look at different career paths. Students can learn more about those jobs in the Occupational Data Bank that can be found in both guides and contains employment, wage, and job outlook information on more than 100 occupations in Pennsylvania.

The guides also highlight jobs in the natural gas, transportation, and manufacturing sectors to help students discover these in-demand occupations that they may not otherwise have considered. With these highlights and additional job information, the guides provide the first steps toward helping young students make informed career decisions.
