Box Score

The Lions took a quick lead in the first inning as Vincent McDowell (West Branch) singled in Garrett Brown (DuBois) and Lance Pennington (Punxsutawney) to give DuBois a 2-0 lead it never relinquished.

Austin Amacher (Ridgway) got the nod from Coach Tom Calliari to start on the mound, and he made sure to make the most of it going 6 1/3 innings allowing three earned runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out one. Moran Bell got the final outs after walking a batter to pick up the save.

The Apprentice School cut the DuBois lead to 2-1 in the second, but DuBois added runs in the fourth and fifth on RBI singles from Toner Corl and Isaac Stouffer (Punxsutawney) to take a 4-1 lead.

The Builders earned on more run in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 4-2, but Penn State DuBois added a pair of runs in the sixth with hits from Zane Morgan (Clearfield) and Brown that scored Brandon Gettig and Corl to make it 6-2.

A home run by Thomas Packert, who also had a double in the contest, got the Builders back within three in the sixth, and The Apprentice School put two runners on in the seventh before Bell shut the door.

“Our pitching has given up four runs in 20 innings,” Calliari said. “Austin took the baton from Toner’s performance last night, and ran with it.”

DuBois will get two cracks at defending its title Thursday when it plays the winner of Thursday mornings loser’s bracket final between The Apprentice School and Bryant & Stratton Albany. That game is at 11 a.m. at Showers Field with the winner taking on DuBois at 2:30 p.m. also at Showers. If DuBois loses the first championship game, a winner-take-all final will take place immediately following the 2:30 p.m. contest.
