ROSEMONT, Ill. – Penn State softball freshman Madison Seifert (Wildwood, Mo.) was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week for the period ending Apr. 17.
The award marks the first of Seifert’s career and the first time a Penn State freshman has earned the award since Alyssa VanDerveer (Hillsborough, N.J.) was named pitcher of the week Apr. 6, 2015.
Seifert notched two wins in the Nittany Lion’s 5-0 week, making an appearance in four of the five games. The Wildwood, Mo. native hurled a complete game win against the Bison of Bucknell giving up one run and striking out three. In the final three games of the week, Seifert made relief appearances with seven combined innings of work.
The freshman pitcher earned her second victory of the week in the final game against the Terrapins, Seifert gave up only two runs in 14.0 innings of work on the week with seven strikeouts and only four walks with a 1.00 ERA.
Seifert has made 25 appearances and eight starts in her first season donning the Blue and White, hurling 77.0 innings with 51 strikeouts. The Wildwood, Mo. Native ties for a team-high nine wins and has tossed two complete games for the Nittany Lions.
Seifert and the rest of the Penn State squad will make the trek to Iowa City, Iowa for its last road series of the 2016 season Friday, Apr. 22. First pitch of the three-game series is set for 7 p.m. ET.
