PennDOT, PSP Stress Safe Driving Ahead of Independence Day Holiday

PENNSYLVANIA – This year, nearly 47 million Americans will journey 50 miles or more during the Independence Day holiday.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), along with the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), urges motorists to avoid aggressive driving ahead of the Independence Day driving period, which runs July 3 through July 7, 2019.

Speeding and other aggressive driving behaviors are among the leading causes of highway crashes and fatalities in Pennsylvania, however, many motorists don’t realize they’re an aggressive driver. Aggressive driving comprises following too closely, driving at excessive speeds, weaving through traffic, and running stop lights and signs.

During the Independence Day holiday last year, PSP’s Troop A issued 820 speeding citations and 187 seatbelt warnings. A motorist caught speeding may be issued a traffic citation for a violation of Title 75, Section 3362, Maximum Speed Limits.

It’s important to note that PSP use radar that monitors the speed of vehicles traveling both toward and away from their patrol units.

In every state, it’s illegal to drive with a blood alcohol concentration of .08 or higher, yet one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 48 minutes in the United States in 2017. During the five-day driving period that encompasses the Independence Day driving period, Troop A made 20 DUI arrests.

Over this holiday period, the Pennsylvania State Police will be on alert for intoxicated drivers and will be strictly enforcing Pennsylvania’s DUI laws.

“The Fourth of July should be a special time for people to come together and celebrate the birth of our great nation,” explained Joe Dubovi, District 10 Executive. “We’ve partnered with the State Police in Indiana County to help remind drivers that under no circumstances is aggressive driving okay. Aggressive driving is illegal and it’s deadly.”
