Pitt Softball Sweeps St. Francis (Pa.)

PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh softball team earned a pair of wins Wednesday afternoon at Vartabedian Field, defeating Saint Francis (PA) 6-1 and 7-5 respectively in a midweek doubleheader.

Pitt [26-14] jumped on the Red Flash [22-17] early in game one, racing to a 6-0 lead after two innings and holding on for a 6-1 victory. In game two, Pitt fought back from a 5-0 deficit before eventually taking the lead on a three-run homer by senior Maggie Sevilla in the bottom of the sixth. The home run put the Panthers up 7-5 and propelled them to their 26th win of the season.

Sophomore Giorgiana Zeremenko had a huge day at the plate for the Panthers, tallying a total of three home runs, six RBIs and three runs scored. With her third long-ball of the day, the slugger tied the program record in single-season home runs (15).

In total, the Panthers hit six home runs in the two games, accounting for all 13 of their runs. Sophomores Erin Hershman and McKayla Taylor, as well as senior Jenna Modic and redshirt senior Shelby Pickett each homered en route to the Pitt sweep.

On the mound, sophomore Kayla Harris pitched a total of eight innings, allowing just one run and earning the win in game two. Modic was credited as the winning pitcher in game one, throwing 3.1 innings and giving up just one run on two hits.

Game One: Pitt 6, Saint Francis 1
· Pitt got on the board early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. After Pickett walked and Modic singled, Zeremenko hit a towering three-run homer to left field. Hershman followed it up with a home run of her own, a solo shot to center field.
· The Panthers added two more in the second to make it 6-0 when Taylor hit a two-run home run, also scoring Pickett.
· Saint Francis responded in the fourth inning, hitting a solo shot to cut the Pitt lead to 6-1 but that was the only run the Red Flash would score in the game.

Game Two: Pitt 7, Saint Francis 5
· Saint Francis got on the board first in game two, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to a homerun by Madison Cabell. Sierra McKee was on first for the hit after picking up a leadoff single.
· Following a scoreless second inning, the Red Flash extended its lead to 5-0 in the third on back-to-back home runs. Cabell hit her second two-run blast of the game and Jordan Seneca followed with a solo shot over the right field wall.
· The Panthers answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fourth to cut Saint Francis’ lead to 5-2. Modic and Zeremenko went back-to-back with solo shots, sending the ball over the center field and left field walls respectively.
· Pitt scored two more in the fifth when Zeremenko hit her third homer of the game, a two-run shot that cut the deficit to 5-4.
· In the bottom of the sixth, Sevilla hit a towering three-run shot to left field, scoring senior pinch runner Morgan Choe and Taylor. The homer would end up being the game-winner, giving the Panthers a 7-5 lead that they would not relinquish.

· Pitt will remain at home for a weekend series against ACC opponent Georgia Tech. The two teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 16 before completing the series on Sunday, April 17 at noon.
