Police: Man Charged with Fleeing and Eluding Police Officer

BROOKVILLE, Pa. (EYT) – On May 26, around 11:10 p.m., a Timblin man was arrested by Brookville Police for Fleeing and Eluding a Police Officer in the area of Madison Avenue to Franklin Avenue, in Brookville, Jefferson County.

According to police, they observed a black Polaris RZR 900 XP-4 traveling east on Madison Avenue. After vehicle passed an officer in an unmarked vehicle, it sped up.

The officer attempted to stop the ATV using emergency visual and audible devices, but the operator of the vehicle refused to stop, police say.

After attempting to stop the vehicle for several blocks, the officer deactivated the lights and siren in an attempt to canvas the area. The vehicle was located behind 2 Franklin Avenue where the police observed it with the lights on.

According to police, the vehicle still attempted to flee from police but struck a large telephone pole on the property.

The driver, identified as 26-year-old Mark Samuel Shaffer, of Timblin, is being charged with fleeing and eluding a police officer, endangering the welfare of others, and 10 other summary traffic violations.

The owner of the ATV, Andy Steele, of Sigel, is also facing charges in relation to this incident.

One person was injured during this incident and was transported to Brookville Hospital by Jefferson County EMS.

Brookville Police were assisted at the scene by Jefferson County EMS and McPherson Towing.
